What are the current requirements for education?
All licensees who are required to take continuing education (that is almost everyone!) must take a total of 16 hours every two years concurrent with their license renewal expiration date.
Can the 16 hours be anything I wish to take that has TREC Approval?
NO! The 16 hours must be comprised of the mandatory TREC Core Course. The remaining hours can be anything you wish to take, as long as you do not repeat the same course in the current license renewal period (for example, you can not take the REALTRACS Plus class three times in the two year period).
How many hours do I receive for taking the TREC Core Course?
Good question! And this is where the curve ball come in.
Before 01/01/2011, the TREC Core Course was valued at 4 CE Hours. Anyone who
took the TREC Core Course before 01/01/2011 received 4 CE Hours, and must take 12 additional CE hours for license renewal.
After 01/01/2011, the TREC Core Course was valued at 6 CE Hours. Anyone who took or takes the TREC Core Course after 01/01/2011 receives 6 CE Hours, and must take 10 additonal hours for license renewal.
That sounds easy enough! What's the problem then?
The problem is this. In order to keep track INTERNALLY at the Real Estate Commission, those who took the TREC Core Course BEFORE 01/01/2011 will see a mysterious "2 hours supplemental Core Course" entered on their education record. Well, don't you believe it!! You didn't take it. And it does NOT count in adding up your 16 hours. If you took the 4 hour Core Class - that is EXACTLY how many hours you will receive credit for from TREC! You still need to take 12 additional CE hours!
Will TREC notify me of this?
Yes, currently TREC is sending out e-mails explaining the supplemental hours. But, at MTAR, we like to keep you as up to date as possible. Again, if you still have questions, let us know!
